ScratchJr: Coding Fun for Young Children (Ages 5-7)

ScratchJr is a visual programming language designed for young children (ages 5 and up) to create interactive stories and games. Kids use colorful blocks to program characters, making them move, jump, dance, and sing! They can even customize characters with a built-in paint editor, add their own sounds and voices, and incorporate personal photos to bring their creations to life.

Inspired by the popular Scratch programming language, ScratchJr simplifies the interface and coding concepts to be developmentally appropriate for younger learners. The app carefully considers children's cognitive, social, and emotional development.

We believe coding is a crucial skill, like reading and writing. It helps children organize their thoughts and express themselves creatively. ScratchJr makes coding accessible to everyone, empowering young children to become creators rather than just consumers of technology.

Through coding with ScratchJr, children develop problem-solving skills, project design abilities, and crucial sequencing skills—essential building blocks for future academic success. The app also integrates math and language in a fun and engaging way, supporting early literacy and numeracy development. It's not just about learning to code; it's about coding to learn.

ScratchJr is a collaborative project involving Tufts University, the MIT Media Lab, and the Playful Invention Company. The Android version was implemented with support from Two Sigma. Graphics are by HvingtQuatre Company and Sarah Thomson.
