Hang
The Hang: A Swiss-Made Idiophone
The Hang, a unique musical instrument classified as an idiophone, originates from Switzerland. Its construction involves two deep-drawn, nitrided steel half-shells, seamlessly joined at the rim. This creates a hollow interior and the instrument's distinctive "UFO" shape.
The top surface ("Ding") features a central "note" and seven or eight surrounding "tone fields," all precisely hammered. The bottom ("Gu") is a smooth surface with a centrally located rolled hole, producing a distinct tone when the rim is struck. It's also known as a handpan.
While sharing some fundamental principles with the steelpan, the Hang functions as a Helmholtz resonator. Its design is the culmination of extensive research into steelpan construction and other instruments.
