For complex objects, zoom in while using the manipulation mode (finger) and carefully outline with the pencil or lasso.

Tip: choose your overlay image first for easier cutting, then pick the background. The overlay stays in place. Tap any layer at the bottom to bring it to the front.

To remove a picture, swipe it until it's almost hidden, and it will be deleted.

Don't worry about layer order. All layers are displayed at the bottom. Tap any layer to bring it forward. It’s easy—you're in control of object and background order.

The only slight learning curve is choosing the right mode (manipulation, pencil/eraser, or lasso). After a couple of minutes of practice, it becomes second nature.
