Unlocking Multiple Pets

Increasing pet friendship

Initially, Stardew Valley allowed only one pet per save. However, the 1.6 update changed this! To unlock the ability to adopt additional pets, you must first maximize your friendship level with your existing pet. This involves:

  • Daily Watering: Ensure your pet's bowl is full daily using your Watering Can (except on rainy/snowy days).
  • Daily Petting: Interact with your pet daily to see a heart appear above its head.
  • Friendship Meter: Monitor your pet's friendship level via the "Animals" tab in the pause menu.

Once the friendship meter is full, Marnie will send you a letter, notifying you of the opportunity to adopt more pets. If you didn't adopt a pet in your first year, this letter arrives at the start of Year 2.

Before or after adopting, visit Robin's shop to commission Pet Bowls (5,000g and 25 Hardwood each). These are essential for maintaining pet friendship levels; neglecting them may cause your pets to run away.

Marnie's shop also sells decorative items like doghouses and cat trees, which don't affect friendship but add to your farm's aesthetic.
