Dragon Age Future Secure: BioWare Dev Offers Hope to Fans

Following layoffs at BioWare impacting key Dragon Age: The Veilguard developers, former series writer Sheryl Chee offered reassurance to fans. This week's EA restructuring prioritized Mass Effect 5, reassigning some Veilguard staff to other EA studios, while others were laid off. This followed EA's announcement that The Veilguard underperformed, engaging only 1.5 million players—significantly below projections. It's unclear if this figure includes unit sales, EA Play Pro subscribers, or free trial participants.

The news, coupled with BioWare's restructuring and layoffs, fueled concerns within the Dragon Age community that the series was effectively dead, particularly with no planned DLC and development concluding last week.

However, Chee, now at Motive Studios working on Iron Man, shared a message of hope on social media. Acknowledging the difficult past two years, she emphasized that the series' spirit lives on through fan contributions. Quoting Camus, she highlighted the power of fan fiction, art, and the community forged around the games, asserting that while EA/BioWare owns the IP, they cannot own the underlying ideas. She concluded that Dragon Age's continued existence rests with the fans, citing fan-created content as evidence of its enduring legacy.

Dragon Age's history includes 2010's Dragon Age: Origins, 2011's Dragon Age 2, and 2014's Dragon Age: Inquisition, the latter having sold over 12 million copies, exceeding EA's internal projections, according to former executive producer Mark Darrah.

While EA hasn't officially declared Dragon Age dead, the future of the series seems uncertain given BioWare's current focus on Mass Effect 5. EA confirmed a dedicated team is developing Mass Effect 5, led by veterans from the original trilogy.
