Edgar Wright's The Running Man Debuts First Trailer

The first trailer for The Running Man has arrived, showcasing Glen Powell in a more faithful adaptation of Stephen King's novel compared to Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1987 sci-fi classic.

The trailer introduces Glen Powell as Ben Richards, a desperate man who enters The Running Man—the most popular TV show in a dystopian America—to secure money for his daughter's medical treatment. With his employment status marked as "blacklisted," Powell's character has no other options. This contrasts with the Arnie version, where Richards is a framed police officer forced into the game.

The show’s format also differs. Powell’s Richards is hunted nationwide as he fights for survival and a shot at the massive cash prize. His every move is tracked, as highlighted in the trailer. To win, Richards simply needs to stay alive for 30 days—though it’s far from easy.

Directed by Edgar Wright, known for Shaun of the Dead and Baby Driver, this new adaptation reflects his signature fast-paced style. Wright aimed to stay true to King’s original novel, featuring Josh Brolin as Killian, the show’s executive producer, and Colman Domingo as Bobby Thompson, the host. Richards confronts Killian before the game begins, vowing revenge.

This version expands the scope beyond the 1987 film. While Powell’s Richards is pursued across the country, Schwarzenegger’s character was confined to an isolated arena with memorable boss battles. The trailer previews an exciting scene where Richards dodges bullets in a hallway before sliding into an elevator to escape.

Throughout the chase, Richards is pursued by a mysterious masked figure named McCone, played by Foundation star Lee Pace, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

One thing is clear: The Running Man will feature Glen Powell on the run—constantly. And yes, he does take his shirt off. We also see Michael Cera, who starred in Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, assisting Richards by spraying water on an electrified floor—a moment that feels straight out of a video game.

According to EW, Cera portrays Elton Parrakis from the book. Wright noted, "His role in the movie might surprise fans of his previous work. Watching him alongside Glen Powell created an unexpectedly entertaining duo."

The Running Man releases on November 7, 2025.
