Marvel Rivals: Are Bots Secretly Influencing Gameplay?

Despite topping Steam and Twitch charts, Marvel Rivals, NetEase Games' hero shooter, is facing scrutiny over the suspected use of bots in its Quickplay matches. The game, lauded for its style and iconic Marvel characters like Spider-Man and Wolverine, boasts a large player base. However, a growing number of players are voicing concerns about encountering AI opponents in standard Quickplay modes, rather than the designated practice modes.

Reddit users have expressed frustration, stating that facing bots in Quickplay diminishes the experience and undermines skill improvement. The concern isn't about the existence of practice modes with adjustable AI difficulty, but the suspected insertion of bots into regular matches.

The prevailing theory suggests Marvel Rivals might deploy bots after a player experiences multiple losses, potentially to prevent frustration and maintain quick matchmaking times. However, NetEase has yet to offer official clarification on this practice.

Social media is rife with anecdotal evidence. Players cite suspicious behaviors like repetitive actions, similarly structured player names (often single words in all caps or unusual name combinations), and enemy profiles labeled "restricted" as indicators of bot presence. The lack of transparency fuels the controversy. One Reddit user highlighted the frustration of not knowing whether improvement in Quickplay is genuine or artificially inflated by facing bots.

The use of bots in online games is not unprecedented, but the lack of transparency in Marvel Rivals is a key point of contention. Some players advocate for a toggle to enable or disable bot matches, while others demand their complete removal. Conversely, some players utilize bot matches for achievement completion.

One Reddit user, ciaranxy, initiated a community discussion, emphasizing the lack of player choice regarding bot encounters in Quickplay. The author confirms personally encountering a suspicious match exhibiting several of the reported red flags. NetEase has been contacted for comment.

Despite this controversy, NetEase is actively developing Marvel Rivals, with plans for the Fantastic Four's inclusion in Season 1: Eternal Night Falls, a new hero every half-season, and the upcoming release of Peter Parker's Advanced Suit 2.0 skin. The bot issue, however, remains a significant point of discussion within the community. Meanwhile, some players are creatively using characters like Invisible Woman to counter suspected bot behavior.
