Get ready, Pokémon fans—The Pokémon Company is stepping into the world of science with a brand-new official encyclopedia written by expert animal ecologists and behaviorists. Discover what Pokécology has in store for trainers and researchers alike.
Pokécology: An Official Encyclopedia For Pokémon Behaviors and Ecology
Official Release Set for June 2025 in Japan
In an exciting collaboration between The Pokémon Company and Shogakukan, one of Japan’s leading comic publishers, comes Pokécology—an in-depth look at the behaviors and ecological systems of Pokémon. Shogakukan officially announced the release date of June 18, 2025 for Japan, with pre-orders already available in bookstores across the country.
The hardcover edition will retail for 1,430 yen (tax included). While no international release has been confirmed yet, considering Pokémon's massive global fanbase, it’s likely that an English version or other language editions will follow shortly after launch.
Exploring Pokémon Through Science
Pokécology offers a fresh perspective on Pokémon by diving deep into their natural habitats, behaviors, and biological traits. This groundbreaking encyclopedia will explore various aspects such as diet, sleeping patterns, physical characteristics, and how different species interact with each other and their environments.
Authored by leading experts from the University of Tokyo—including veterinary behaviorists and ecology specialists—the project is led by renowned ecologist Yoshinari Yonehara, who spearheaded the behavioral research on wild Pokémon. Bringing these findings to life visually is illustrator Chihiro Kino, known for her work on numerous animal ecology publications, who will provide vivid full-color illustrations of each featured Pokémon.
While previous Pokémon books have focused on battling strategies, game mechanics, and visual encyclopedias, Pokécology marks the first time the franchise delves into the scientific side of Pokémon biology and environmental habits. It’s not just a guide—it’s a learning tool designed to help both young and adult fans better understand the fascinating creatures we’ve come to know and love.
