"Roia: Emoak's New Serene Mobile Game"
One of the most exciting aspects of mobile gaming is the way it has spurred innovation in game design. The unique, buttonless interface of smartphones and their widespread adoption have led to a fascinating evolution in video game genres, and Roia is a prime example of this trend.
Developed by the innovative indie studio Emoak, known for titles such as Paper Climb, Machinaero, and the acclaimed light-based puzzle game Lyxo, Roia is a captivating puzzle-adventure game. It's all about guiding a river from the mountain top to the sea by manipulating the landscape with simple finger gestures.
Emoak's press release for Roia reveals a deeply personal story behind the game. Chief designer Tobias Sturn drew inspiration from his childhood memories of playing in the creek behind his grandparents' house, where he and his grandfather built homemade waterwheels, bridges, and other contraptions to explore the flow and behavior of water. Tragically, Sturn's grandfather passed away during the development of Roia, and the game is a heartfelt tribute to him.
When it comes to gameplay, Roia defies easy categorization. Though there are challenges and obstacles to navigate, the true essence of the game lies in its calming, immersive experience. Players journey through meticulously crafted environments ranging from serene forests and lush meadows to charming villages, guided by a helpful white bird that offers gentle prompts.
Visually, Roia aligns with the elegant, minimalist aesthetic seen in games like Monument Valley. The game's soundscape is equally impressive, featuring a stirring soundtrack composed by Johannes Johannson, who previously contributed to Emoak's Lyxo.
Roia is available for purchase on the Google Play Store and the App Store at a price of $2.99. Dive into this unique and heartfelt mobile gaming experience today.
