Sony Unveils New PlayStation Studio, Upscaling AAA Development
Sony's Unveiled Los Angeles Studio Fuels AAA Game Speculation
A newly established PlayStation studio in Los Angeles, California, is generating significant buzz within the gaming community. Confirmed by a recent job posting, this 20th addition to PlayStation's first-party lineup is developing a high-profile, original AAA title for the PS5.
The secrecy surrounding the studio has sparked numerous theories regarding its origins and project. One prominent theory suggests it houses a Bungie spin-off team, formed following layoffs in July 2024 that saw 155 Bungie employees transition to Sony Interactive Entertainment. This team was reportedly working on Bungie's "Gummybears" incubation project.
Another compelling possibility centers around Jason Blundell, a veteran Call of Duty developer and former co-founder of Deviation Games. Deviation Games, which was developing a PS5 AAA title, unfortunately closed in March 2024. However, many former Deviation Games employees subsequently joined PlayStation, leading to speculation that Blundell's team is now the core of this new Los Angeles studio. This theory gains traction considering the longer gestation period of Blundell's team compared to the Bungie spin-off. The project's nature remains undisclosed, but it's speculated that it could be a continuation or reboot of Deviation Games' previous endeavor.
Regardless of its origins, the establishment of this new studio is exciting news for PlayStation fans. While an official announcement and details about the game remain elusive, the prospect of another first-party AAA title adds to the growing anticipation for future PlayStation releases. It's likely to be several years before Sony reveals any concrete information, but the news itself is a welcome addition to the PlayStation ecosystem.
