Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Points to Rumored Mouse Support Function
A newly published patent reveals exciting new features for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons, including rumored mouse functionality. Let's delve into the details and the upcoming Nintendo Direct announcement.
Switch 2 Joy-Cons: Mouse Support and More
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published a Nintendo patent on February 6, 2025, detailing innovative features for the Switch 2's Joy-Cons. The patent strongly suggests mouse functionality, corroborating earlier speculation sparked by the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which showed the controller being swiped across a surface.
This patent confirms previous rumors, as Nintendo has remained tight-lipped about Switch 2 specifics. The patent describes a sensor that detects reflected light, enabling mouse-like operation by tracking movement across a surface.
Enhanced Joy-Con Design and New Controllers
The Switch 2 Joy-Cons retain the detachable design of their predecessors. In addition to the mouse functionality, the patent mentions a new charging dock accommodating two Joy-Cons simultaneously and a magnetic attachment with a wrist strap.
The patent also introduces a novel controller design: two half-controllers, each equipped with an optical sensor for mouse-like control, which can be combined into a single unit using a separate attachment.
Important Note: It's crucial to remember that the patent's details may not represent the final Switch 2 product. Nintendo has yet to officially confirm these features.
Upcoming Nintendo Direct: April 2nd, 2025
Nintendo of America announced via Twitter (X) on February 5, 2025, that a Nintendo Direct focusing on the Switch 2 will air on April 2nd, 2025, at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET across all official Nintendo social media platforms. While the Switch 2's 2025 release is confirmed, the exact date remains unannounced. For further details, visit our Switch 2 information page.
