Tencent Takes Majority Share in Wuthering Waves' Kuro Games
Tencent, a leading Chinese technology company, has reportedly secured a controlling stake in Kuro Games, the developer behind the popular titles Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven. This acquisition significantly alters the landscape for both companies.
Tencent's Increased Holdings
Tencent's share in Kuro Games has risen to approximately 51.4%, following the acquisition of an additional 37% stake. This surpasses the threshold for majority control, making Tencent the sole external shareholder. The tech giant's initial investment in Kuro Games occurred in 2023, and this recent expansion represents substantial growth in their involvement.
Maintaining Independence
Despite Tencent's majority ownership, Kuro Games assures continued operational independence. This follows a similar model to Tencent's relationships with Riot Games (League of Legends, Valorant) and Supercell (Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars). Kuro Games' official statement highlights the acquisition as fostering a "more stable external environment" and supporting its long-term independent strategy. Tencent has yet to publicly acknowledge the acquisition.
Kuro Games' Success
Kuro Games has achieved notable success with its action RPG, Punishing: Gray Raven, and its recently released open-world RPG, Wuthering Waves. Each game has reportedly generated over $120 million USD in revenue and continues to receive regular updates. The recognition of Wuthering Waves with a Players' Voice nomination at The Game Awards further underscores the studio's achievements.
