Randy Pitchford, Gearbox CEO and creator of the Borderlands franchise, has pledged his full support to fulfill a dying wish: granting Caleb McAlpine, a 37-year-old Borderlands enthusiast battling terminal cancer, early access to the highly anticipated Borderlands 4.

Caleb's heartfelt plea, shared on Reddit, touched the hearts of many. Diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in August, he expressed his fervent desire to experience the upcoming looter-shooter before his time runs out. The game, slated for a 2025 release, seemed impossibly far off for Caleb.

Responding swiftly on Twitter (now X), Pitchford assured Caleb and the community that Gearbox would "do whatever they can to make something happen," adding that they've since been in direct communication.

Borderlands 4, unveiled at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024, is still over a year away, leaving Caleb with limited time. His GoFundMe page, aiming to raise $9,000 for medical expenses, highlights the urgency of his situation. Doctors estimate he has 7 to 12 months to live, possibly extending to two years with successful treatment.

Despite his prognosis, Caleb maintains a positive outlook, drawing strength from his faith. His GoFundMe has already garnered significant support, exceeding $6,210 from 128 donors.

Gearbox's History of Compassion

This isn't the first time Gearbox has demonstrated its compassion for fans facing illness. In 2019, Trevor Eastman, battling cancer, received an early copy of Borderlands 3. Sadly, Trevor passed away later that year, but his memory lives on – Gearbox immortalized him by naming a legendary weapon, the Trevonator, in his honor.

Another poignant example is the tribute to Michael Mamaril, a Borderlands fan who passed away in 2011. Responding to a request from Michael's friend, Gearbox included an NPC in Borderlands 2 named after him, offering rewards to players as a touching memorial.

While Borderlands 4's release date remains distant, Gearbox's commitment to fulfilling Caleb's wish, coupled with their past actions, offers hope and underscores their dedication to their community. As Pitchford stated, Gearbox aims to elevate Borderlands 4 to unprecedented heights. Fans eagerly await further details. In the meantime, adding Borderlands 4 to your Steam wishlist keeps you updated on the latest news.
