Ace Attorney Investigations Reboots Return!
Hello again, readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for September 4th, 2024! Summer's warmth has faded, leaving behind memories of sunshine and fun. I'm feeling refreshed and ready for autumn, and I appreciate sharing those summer days with you all. Let's dive into today's gaming news: a plethora of reviews, some fresh releases, and a few enticing sales!
Reviews & Mini-Views
Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)
The Nintendo Switch has given us a second chance at many classic games, and now the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection joins the ranks. This compilation brings us Miles Edgeworth's two adventures, finally fully localized in English. The sequel masterfully builds upon the original's storyline, enhancing the experience retroactively. The shift in perspective to the prosecution's side offers a fresh take on the familiar gameplay.
While the core mechanics remain largely unchanged – searching for clues, questioning witnesses, solving cases – the unique presentation and Edgeworth's personality add a new dimension. The pacing can feel less structured than the main Ace Attorney games, potentially leading to some lengthy cases, but fans of the series will find this sub-series highly enjoyable. If the first game feels slow, persevere to the second; it's significantly better and clarifies aspects of the first.
Bonus features are generous, similar to the Apollo Justice collection. A gallery showcases art and music, a story mode allows for relaxed play, and players can choose between original and updated graphics/soundtracks. A helpful dialogue history feature is included, a welcome addition to the series.
The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection offers a compelling contrast between the two games, creating a strong overall experience. The localization of the second game is a fantastic achievement, and the extras make this a must-have for fans. With this release, nearly every Ace Attorney game is now available on the Switch. If you've enjoyed the others, this is an essential addition to your collection.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)
A sequel to Gimmick! is a surprising yet welcome development. Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful sequel stays true to the original, perhaps even too much for some. Six challenging levels of physics-based platforming await, pushing players to their limits from the start. However, an easier mode is now available for those seeking a less intense experience.
The protagonist's star attack remains central to gameplay, serving as a weapon, vehicle, and puzzle solver. New collectibles offer customization options, rewarding players for tackling difficult optional sections. The game's length is moderate, but the difficulty remains high. Frequent deaths are inevitable, but generous checkpoints prevent excessive frustration.
Gimmick! 2 successfully builds upon its predecessor while maintaining its own identity. Fans of the original will be delighted, and challenging platformer enthusiasts should definitely check it out. However, those seeking a relaxed experience should be warned: it's just as demanding as the original, despite the easier difficulty option.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)
Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, shifting from the original's action-platformer style to a shoot 'em up experience. While the Switch's hardware might struggle at times, the intense action, rocking soundtrack, and creepy visuals make it a worthwhile experience. The weapon system adds a unique layer of strategy, requiring players to manage energy and utilize both ranged and melee attacks.
Mastering the interplay between weapons and the dash maneuver is key to survival. While performance might be better on other platforms, the Switch version still delivers a satisfying gameplay experience. Expect a similar atmosphere to the original, but with a completely different style of gameplay.
SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)
This licensed game caters primarily to fans of the Umamusume franchise. The game excels in fan service, offering a well-written story and systems that reward dedicated players. However, the limited number of mini-games and lack of depth may disappoint those unfamiliar with the source material. The mini-games themselves lack the staying power of a true party game.
Even for fans, the focus on fan service might overshadow other aspects. The presentation is strong, and the unlockables could keep dedicated fans engaged for a while. But the overall experience is short-lived, especially for those without prior attachment to the franchise.
SwitchArcade Score: 3/5
Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)
This collection shines a light on Sunsoft's lesser-known 8-bit games. It includes Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola, all fully localized for the first time in English. The package includes save states, rewind, display options, and art galleries for each game.
The games themselves offer a mixed bag. 53 Stations is challenging due to its weapon mechanics, but charming in its thematic approach. Ripple Island is a solid adventure game, while The Wing of Madoola is ambitious but uneven. None are top-tier NES titles, but none are outright bad either.
Sunsoft fans and those who enjoy exploring lesser-known titles will find this collection rewarding. The careful handling of each game and the localization make this a valuable addition for any retro gaming enthusiast.
SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
