AMD Unveils Next-Gen Gaming Laptop Chips Using Last-Gen Architecture
AMD has recently unveiled its next-generation Ryzen 8000 series processors tailored specifically for gaming laptops, with the flagship model being the Ryzen 9 8945HX. Unlike the Ryzen AI 300 series that hit the market earlier this year, these new processors are based on the previous-generation Zen 4 architecture. This choice might raise eyebrows, but let's dive into what these chips bring to the table.
AMD is set to launch four new processors designed for high-performance gaming laptops. The crown jewel, the Ryzen 9 8945HX, boasts 16 cores and 32 threads, with a boost clock reaching up to 5.4GHz. For those looking for a slightly more modest option, the Ryzen 7 8745HX offers 8 cores and 16 threads, with a boost clock of 5.1GHz. Interestingly, these new processors share remarkably similar specifications with their last-generation counterparts, such as the Ryzen 9 7945HX, which also features 16 cores and a 5.4GHz boost clock along with 80MB of cache.
These processors are set to pair with the fastest graphics chips available in high-end gaming laptops. My earlier review of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 Mobile highlighted its struggles when paired with the lower-power AMD Ryzen AI HX 370 processor, despite the latter being built on the newer Zen 5 architecture. In contrast, the Ryzen 9 8945HX can be configured with a TDP ranging from 55W to 75W, promising a significant performance boost, although a Zen 5 chip with the same power budget would have offered even greater performance gains.
If you've been holding off on purchasing a new gaming laptop in anticipation of AMD's latest processors, you'll be pleased to know that these new chips will be integrated into high-end gaming laptops over the coming months. Below, I've outlined the detailed specifications of the new Ryzen 8000 series processors.
