Andor Season 2 Explores Key Star Wars Conflict
Lucasfilm has masterfully expanded the Star Wars universe with shows like Star Wars: Andor and Star Wars Rebels, introducing us to the diverse heroes and worlds that played pivotal roles in the battle against the Empire. While we're familiar with iconic locations like Yavin-IV, Hoth, and Endor from the films, series like these have brought to light other crucial planets such as Lothal and Ferrix. Now, with the first three episodes of Andor Season 2, a new world has captured the attention of fans: Ghorman.
More: The Andor Cast Reacts to 5 Major Moments From the Season 2 Premiere
What is Ghorman, and why does it hold such significance in the Galactic Civil War? How does the situation on Ghorman evolve into a defining moment for the Rebel Alliance? Here's everything you need to know about this lesser-known yet crucial part of the Star Wars galaxy.
Ghorman in Star Wars: Andor
Star Wars: Andor first mentioned the planet Ghorman in the Season 1 episode "Narkina 5." During a meeting between Forest Whitaker's Saw Gerrera and Stellan Skarsgård's Luthen Rael, Saw references the ill-fated Ghorman Front, using it as a cautionary tale in their discussions on how to combat the Empire.
In Season 2, Ghorman takes center stage. The premiere episode features Ben Mendelsohn's Director Krennic addressing a group of ISB agents about a pressing issue on the planet. He presents a documentary highlighting Ghorman's thriving textile industry, known for its silk fabric sourced from a unique spider species, which is the planet's main export.
However, Krennic reveals that the Empire's true interest lies in Ghorman's abundant calcite reserves. He claims this calcite is essential for research into renewable energy, but given Krennic's history in Rogue One, it's likely a deception. More plausibly, the calcite is needed for the Death Star's construction, as it's a critical component in Project: Stardust, alongside Kyber crystals, contributing to the delays in completing the superweapon.
The challenge with extracting calcite on such a scale is that it would render Ghorman uninhabitable. This raises the question of how to handle the native Ghor population, especially since Emperor Palpatine cannot afford to devastate a world openly without facing repercussions. The Death Star's purpose is to eliminate such constraints.
Krennic's strategy involves manipulating public opinion against Ghorman, justifying the Empire's takeover and displacement of its people. Although his propaganda team believes they can achieve this through social manipulation, Denise Gough's Dedra Meero recognizes the need for a more direct approach. The Empire plans to install a group of radical rebels to portray Ghorman as a dangerous place, allowing the Empire to intervene under the pretext of restoring order.
This storyline is set to unfold throughout Season 2, drawing in characters like Diego Luna's Cassian Andor and Genevieve O'Reilly's Mon Mothma as Ghorman becomes a focal point in the escalating Galactic Civil War. Given the planet's significance, the outcome is expected to be both tragic and a turning point for the Rebel Alliance.
What Is the Ghorman Massacre?
Andor Season 2 is poised to depict the Ghorman Massacre, an event previously hinted at in Disney-era Star Wars content but pivotal in the formation of the Rebel Alliance.
Originally from the Star Wars Legends universe, the Ghorman Massacre occurred in 18 BBY when Peter Cushing's Grand Moff Tarkin, in response to a peaceful protest against Imperial taxes, landed his ship on the protesters, resulting in numerous casualties. This act of brutality not only fueled public outrage but also galvanized Senators like Mon Mothma and Bail Organa to support the burgeoning rebel movement, directly contributing to the establishment of the Rebel Alliance.
In the Disney era, while the timeline and specifics may differ, the essence of the Ghorman Massacre remains the same—an instance of the Empire's overreach that sparks a significant rebel response.
