Atari Announces Another Acquisition

Atari's Infogrames subsidiary acquires the Surgeon Simulator franchise from tinyBuild. This acquisition marks a key step in Infogrames' revival as a publishing label under the Atari umbrella, focusing on titles outside Atari's core offerings. Infogrames, a brand synonymous with game development and global distribution in the 80s and 90s, aims to expand its reach through digital and physical distribution channels, as well as creating new installments and collections. The label's history includes titles like Alone in the Dark, the Backyard Baseball series, the Putt-Putt series, and the Sonic Advance games.

Infogrames' renewed focus on expansion is evident in this latest acquisition. Geoffroy Châteauvieux, Infogrames Manager, highlighted Surgeon Simulator's enduring popularity and unique appeal as a key factor in the decision. The acquisition follows the April 2024 purchase of Totally Reliable Delivery Service, further solidifying Infogrames' resurgence.

Atari Acquires Surgeon Simulator Franchise

Surgeon Simulator, originally released in 2013, centers around the hilariously inept surgeon Nigel Burke and his patient, "Bob." Its blend of dark humor and chaotic gameplay quickly gained traction. Bossa Studios, the original developer, expanded the game to iOS, Android, PS4, and eventually VR platforms, culminating in Surgeon Simulator CPR for the Nintendo Switch in 2018. A sequel, Surgeon Simulator 2, launched on PC and Xbox in 2020 and 2021 respectively. The future of the franchise remains uncertain following Bossa Studios' 2023 staff reductions and tinyBuild's acquisition of several Bossa Studios IPs in 2022. Atari, however, aims to build upon the established success of Surgeon Simulator with its acquisition.
