Avengers Director Joe Russo Says AI Was Used for Voice Modulation in Netflix Film The Electric State, Insists 'AI Is Best Suited Towards Creativity'
The Russo brothers' new Netflix film, The Electric State, has sparked considerable conversation since its release, particularly regarding its use of AI in voice modulation. Joe Russo, director of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, defended this choice, suggesting the technique is now so accessible that "any 10-year-old could do it after watching a TikTok video."
He acknowledged concerns surrounding AI, stating in an interview with The Times, "There’s a lot of finger-pointing and hyperbole because people are afraid. They don’t understand. But ultimately you’ll see AI used more significantly." Russo views AI's current "generative state," prone to what he calls "hallucinations," as best suited for creative applications, unlike mission-critical tasks. He points out that this limitation explains why self-driving cars and AI surgery aren't yet widespread.
This perspective contrasts with the views of many artists who see AI as antithetical to creativity. However, some studios are embracing the technology. In July 2024, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos claimed audiences are unconcerned about AI's use in film and television, asserting it's "a great way for creators to tell better stories," drawing a parallel to the evolution of animation from hand-drawn to CG.
This enthusiasm isn't universal. Last month, Marvel denied using AI for teaser posters for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, despite a four-fingered hand appearing in one image.
The Electric State, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, and adapted from Simon Stalenhag's 2018 novel, boasts a star-studded cast including Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, Woody Harrelson, Jason Alexander, Anthony Mackie, Jenny Slate, Giancarlo Esposito, Brian Cox, and Stanley Tucci. IGN's review gave the film a 4/10, describing it as a "$300-million anti-event movie."
The Russo brothers are slated to direct the next two Avengers films: 2026's Avengers: Doomsday and 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars.
