Beginner's Guide to Mastering Avowed's RPG Adventure
Avowed is now available, blending Obsidian's signature RPG depth with accessibility for newcomers. RPGs can feel daunting for beginners, but these tips will guide you through the journey, ensuring you’re never alone.
Master the Fundamentals
Avowed follows classic RPG mechanics. Earn XP through quests, combat, exploration, and more to level up. Each level grants attribute and ability points to customize your character. Shape them into a fierce melee fighter or a spellcasting mage—your choice defines your playstyle.
Attributes determine your character’s strengths. I often lean toward scholarly builds for their lore-rich dialogue, but pick what suits you. Avowed lets you respec your points if your build isn’t clicking, making it a forgiving RPG for first-timers.
Discover Avowed’s Rich World

Avowed balances guided storytelling with exploration. While story objectives are clear, resist rushing toward them. This game rewards wandering—explore to uncover hidden treasures and side quests that enrich your adventure.
RPGs shine when you immerse yourself in their worlds. In Avowed, straying from the main path reveals loot-filled caves, buildings, and side quests. Many side missions are simple, offering easy XP to boost your character.
Books and notes deepen the narrative, a hallmark of Obsidian’s storytelling. Take time to read them. Treasure maps scattered across the world lead to rare gear or coins, valuable for upgrading your arsenal.
Exploration also yields gold, key for purchasing superior weapons and gear. Better equipment makes a huge difference in tough battles, especially against bosses. Rushing the story might leave you underprepared, so explore thoroughly.
Keep Health and Essence Potions Stocked
Combat in Avowed can challenge newcomers. Balance physical and essence attacks while monitoring your health and essence bars. Stock up on health potions (bright red) and essence potions (bright pink), found across the world or sold by city vendors.
Use potions wisely. For minor health loss, rely on food found during exploration. Save health potions for critical moments and reserve certain foods or herbs to counter effects like poison.
Only use health potions when your health is critically low—don’t treat them like an instant reload in a shooter.

Strengthen Your Companions

Leveling up grants skill and attribute points to enhance your combat and dialogue options. Don’t overlook your companions—upgrading their abilities is crucial to avoid being overwhelmed in battle.
Companions aid in combat and may offer healing. Weak companions can lead to party wipes, but well-upgraded ones become invaluable, easing the path to victory.
Enhance Your Equipment
Gather resources while exploring to upgrade weapons and gear. At camps, use the upgrade station to the left of the entrance to boost your equipment.
Upgrading is key for gear you plan to keep. Early on, swap weapons frequently, so be selective with resources. Upgrades improve attack power, critical chance, or defense, making high-quality gear worth the investment.
Play Your Way and Enjoy

Avowed invites you to lose yourself in its world. Focus on the main story or dive into every side quest—both paths are rewarding. The magic of this RPG lies in crafting your own adventure in the Living Lands.
This is your beginner’s guide to thriving in Avowed.
Avowed is available now on PC and Xbox.
