Avowed: Exploring All Backgrounds and Their Roles
*Avowed* boasts a comprehensive character creator that goes beyond mere aesthetics. By choosing a Background, players can dive into a rich backstory that influences their narrative journey. Here's a detailed look at every *Avowed* Background and their unique contributions to the game.
Every Avowed Background, Listed
In *Avowed*, players can select from five distinct Backgrounds, each providing unique dialogue options and a starting weapon. Importantly, all Backgrounds can utilize any equipment and abilities in the game. Let's explore the narrative role of each:
Arcane Scholar: As an Arcane Scholar, your character has an academic history, having graduated from Bragganhyl Academy. You've published a treatise on soul lineages, which stirred controversy and led to your arrest. However, the emperor saw your potential and recruited you to the imperial court archives. Arcane Scholars are well-versed in the occult, legal precedent, historical observation, and poetry, influencing their dialogue choices.
Court Augur: The Court Augur's tragic backstory involves being ostracized as a witch after the village crops failed, leading to visions of persecution. Fleeing to Highcrown, the emperor recognized your mystic abilities and made you his personal seer. This Background connects deeply with the spiritual realm and magic, offering dialogue options that resonate with the divine. It's ideal for players aiming to role-play as a wizard and will find a strong connection with the companion Giatta.
Noble Scion: Born into a family of wealth, influence, and questionable morals, the Noble Scion's life crumbled due to scandal. Seeking redemption, you turned to the emperor for mercy. As a loyal ally, this Background is perfect for players who wish to uphold the empire's interests in the Living Lands.
Vanguard Scout: The Vanguard Scout narrowly escaped execution by the empire. Preferring the wilderness over political intrigue, your skills in tracking and espionage make you a valuable asset. This Background suits players interested in a hunter role-play and aligns well with the companion Marius.
War Hero: Having quelled a violent Skaenite uprising, the War Hero was rewarded with a place among elite warriors. Your loyalty and grit are prized by the emperor. This Background is excellent for those wanting to embody a warrior and will likely find a strong connection with the companion Kai.
Every Background's Starting Weapon in Avowed
Each Background comes with a starting weapon, but these are of low Quality and are all One-Handed Melee items. As you progress in *Avowed*, you'll need to upgrade or replace these weapons. It's advisable to choose a Background based on the narrative and role-play appeal, as the starting weapons are easily replaceable in the Living Lands after the tutorial.
Here are the starting weapons for each Background:
- Arcane Scholar – Common Dagger (One-Handed)
- Court Augur – Common Mace (One-Handed)
- Noble Scion – Common Sword (One-Handed)
- Vanguard Scout – Common Axe (One-Handed)
- War Hero – Common Spear (One-Handed)
These starting weapons can be found leaning against some crates near the shipwreck during the On Strange Shores Quest.
That covers all the backgrounds in *Avowed* and their unique roles within the game.
*Avowed is available now on PC and Xbox.*
