Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed details about a shelved project: a Baldur's Gate 4.

A Playable Baldur's Gate 4 Was Abandoned

In a recent interview with PC Gamer, CEO Swen Vincke disclosed that a follow-up to BG3, already in a playable state, was abandoned in favor of new projects. While acknowledging its potential appeal to fans, Vincke cited the team's weariness after years of working within the Dungeons & Dragons universe as the reason for its cancellation. The prospect of potentially spending another three years iterating on a similar project proved unappealing.

The decision, however, boosted team morale. Vincke emphasized the desire to pursue original ideas, leading to a renewed sense of creative freedom and high spirits within Larian Studios. This also led to the shelving of planned BG3 DLC.

Moving Forward: New Projects and a Potential Divinity Sequel

Larian Studios is now focused on two undisclosed projects, described by Vincke as their most ambitious yet. While a Divinity: Original Sin sequel is "definitely on the horizon," Vincke clarified that their next entry in that series will be unexpected.
