"Breakout Beyond: A Fresh Twist on Atari's Classic"
The iconic 1976 game Breakout is set for a modern revival with Breakout Beyond, a fresh take on Atari's classic brick-breaker. Developed by Choice Provisions, the studio behind the BIT.TRIP series, Breakout Beyond introduces a unique horizontal progression where players move the paddle and ball from left to right. The core objective remains the same—breaking bricks—but with an added twist: as players rack up combos, the game's lights and effects become more intense, enhancing the visual experience.
Adding to the excitement, special bricks in Breakout Beyond can trigger stunning effects, from massive explosions to an actual laser cannon, adding layers of strategy and spectacle to the gameplay. The game is set to feature 72 levels, and for those looking for an endless challenge, there's an unlockable endless mode with an online global leaderboard. Additionally, players can enjoy the game with a friend through a local two-player co-op option.
Originally slated for exclusive release on the Intellivision Amico in 2020, Breakout Beyond's development took a turn when Atari acquired and decided to complete the game. Ethan Stearns, Atari's senior director of games publishing, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, "We're thrilled to be able to bring this gem to our players. The team thought it was a brilliant concept, preserving the heart of Breakout's gameplay while also giving the formula a completely new spin. Breakout Beyond is a worthy new entry into the Breakout pantheon, and we can't wait to see the insane combos brick-breakers will make."
The Intellivision Amico, announced in 2018 with an anticipated 2020 launch, has faced numerous setbacks and delays, and remains unreleased. Last year, Atari acquired the branding and rights to Intellivision, though not the Amico itself.
Breakout Beyond is scheduled to launch later this year across multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS, promising a wide reach for this innovative take on a classic game.
