Vincent van Gogh created his iconic Sunflowers series while residing in Arles, France, a highly productive period in his career. He held a deep emotional connection to the sunflower, associating it with gratitude. He considered it an artistic muse, writing to a friend:
"*If \[Georges\] Jeannin has the peony, \[Ernest\] Quost the hollyhock, I indeed, before others, have taken the sunflower.*"
In August 1888, van Gogh painted four versions of sunflowers in a vase. He revisited this theme in January 1889, producing a copy of the third version and two different copies of the fourth version.

Among these seven paintings, the fourth version and its two repetitions are the most celebrated. The original fourth version (F454) is housed at the National Gallery in London. One repetition (F457) is displayed at the Sompo Museum of Art in Tokyo. The other repetition (F458)—arguably the most iconic due to its vibrant colors—is located at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. This LEGO set, a collaboration between the Van Gogh Museum (established in 1973) and LEGO, is a tribute to the F458 version.

The kit includes 34 numbered bags and an instruction booklet with a QR code linking to a podcast about van Gogh and his inspirations. The build process is practical; you first construct the frame, which can be leaned against a wall while you build the canvas. The canvas is then mounted into the frame and secured with pins, mirroring the real-life process.

A clever detail replicates a historical fact: art experts discovered that van Gogh added a wooden strip to the top of the canvas to accommodate the sunflowers. The LEGO set cleverly mirrors this, with a separate strip added to the top using brown bricks. This subtle detail, only apparent to the builder, adds a layer of exclusivity and appreciation for the artist's process.

Building the sunflowers is somewhat repetitive, reflecting the dedication van Gogh put into his work. Take your time; it's not a race. The wilting flowers and those shown in profile add depth and realism. What initially seems abstract becomes meaningful when viewed from a distance.

The completed set's ideal placement is on a wall, making it a conversation piece long after the build is finished. This LEGO set is a superb creation, highly recommended and a fantastic start to 2025's LEGO releases.
LEGO Vincent van Gogh - Sunflowers, Set #31215, retails for $199.99 and contains 2615 pieces. It's available exclusively at the LEGO Store.
