Buy Original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Before Switch 2 Release
Nintendo unveiled all the exciting details about the Switch 2 during its April Direct, and since then, fans in the U.S. have been eagerly awaiting the opening of preorders. While the console's price wasn't a shock, the announcement of the launch prices for first-party Switch 2 games certainly turned heads. Most notably, *Mario Kart World* will set you back $80 at launch. Alongside the console, Nintendo is also introducing a new line of Switch 2 accessories that are pricier than those of the original Switch, and these costs have only risen since the initial announcement.
One accessory that caught my attention is the new Switch 2 Pro controller, now priced at a hefty $85. As someone with multiple original Switch Pro controllers, the thought of shelling out for a new version wasn't appealing. Fortunately, Nintendo confirmed in a developer interview that the original Switch Pro controller will be compatible with the Switch 2, much to my relief.
Where You Can Still Buy Switch Pro Controllers

While many gamers might opt for the newer Switch 2 Pro controller, it's not a necessity for most games. If you already own a Switch Pro controller, you can comfortably stick with it and save the $85 to spend on new games. For those without a Pro controller and planning to buy the Switch 2, the standard Switch Pro controller remains a more affordable option at $69.99.
It's worth noting that these older controllers might sell out before the Switch 2 hits the market, making way for the new model. Amazon is already experiencing significant stock shortages, offering only third-party alternatives. In addition to the compatibility of the regular Switch Pro controller, Nintendo has also confirmed that the original Joy-Con controllers will work with the Switch 2. However, we generally recommend the Switch Pro controller over Joy-Con for most games due to its superior comfort and functionality.
When Will the Switch 2 Pro Controller Be Available?
If the new Switch 2 Pro controller is the only accessory you're eager to get your hands on, you'll need to wait until the console launches. The new controller will be officially available when the Switch 2 hits the market on June 5. You can start preordering the console on April 24, which is likely when preorders for the official accessories will also open. Keep in mind that the Switch 2 Pro controller is only compatible with the Switch 2 and won't work with the standard Switch.
Listings for the Switch 2 Pro controller have already started appearing at Walmart and Best Buy, though without a specific preorder date. Walmart also has listings for Switch 2 games that you'll soon be able to preorder.
