Originally launched on the PlayStation in Japan and North America in 2000, and subsequently in Europe in 2001, it saw a PC port in Europe and Japan in 2003. The game follows the journey of Ryu, a protagonist with the unique ability to transform into a dragon, as he allies with other warriors to thwart an emperor's sinister plan to obliterate the world.

Under GOG's ongoing Preservation Program, Breath of Fire IV has been meticulously updated for today's PCs and released without DRM on their platform. This enhanced version is fully optimized for modern systems, ensuring compatibility with Windows 10 and 11. It includes both English and Japanese localizations, along with upgraded graphics facilitated by an advanced DirectX renderer. Players can enjoy new display options such as Windowed Mode, V-Sync, Anti-Aliasing, and refined gamma correction for enhanced visuals. Furthermore, the audio engine has been overhauled, bringing back missing environmental sounds and introducing new configuration options for a richer gaming experience.
