Captain America: Brave New World Is the Start of Avengers 2.0

Feb 21,25

Six years after the Avengers disbanded following Thanos' defeat and Tony Stark's death, the world once again needs its mightiest heroes. With new Avengers films slated for 2026 and 2027, the MCU must swiftly reassemble the team, a process initiated in Captain America: Brave New World.

Marvel Studios producer Nate Moore explains the strategic delay in reforming the Avengers after Endgame, stating the need to allow audiences to miss the team. He highlights Captain America's central role in successful Avengers iterations, emphasizing the time invested in developing Sam Wilson into a capable leader following Steve Rogers' passing of the shield. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showcased Wilson's struggles, culminating in his confident embrace of the Captain America mantle in Brave New World. However, a new challenge awaits: leading a new Avengers team.

A marketing clip reveals President Ross (Harrison Ford), succeeding the late William Hurt, tasks Wilson with restarting the Avengers initiative. This might surprise fans, given Ross' role in establishing the Sokovia Accords. Director Julius Onah explains Ross' transformation into a statesman seeking amends for past mistakes, recognizing the Avengers' potential global benefit. Ross' military background underscores his understanding of the tactical advantage a superhero team provides.

This new Avengers team, however, will differ significantly. Captain America's official government role, established in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, positions the team as a branch of the US defense department. Moore explains Ross' strategic motivation: controlling the Avengers' power to prevent unchecked actions and gain a tactical advantage.

Ross' interest stems from the discovery of Adamantium, a potent alternative to Vibranium, within the petrified Celestial from Eternals. This discovery potentially triggers a global arms race, making a superhero team invaluable. Moore emphasizes the significant advantage a nation possessing the Avengers would hold.

The potential for conflict between Ross and Wilson is highlighted, given their history and differing views on government oversight. Onah emphasizes the emotional journey Wilson undertakes, contrasting his ideals with Ross' past actions. The tension between them is palpable.

The possibility of John Walker leading a government-sanctioned Avengers team in Thunderbolts is raised, leaving Wilson free to form an independent team. This sets the stage for the arrival of Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. Brave New World serves as a crucial step in Wilson's journey to becoming the Avengers leader, showcasing his worthiness through empathy, a defining characteristic. Moore and Onah emphasize Wilson's journey of self-belief and the audience's acceptance of him as the current Captain America.

With only two films between Brave New World and Avengers: Doomsday, Wilson's recruitment efforts in Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four: First Steps are anticipated. While the path to assembling Avengers 2.0 is shorter than the lead-up to the first Avengers, the anticipation for the team's reformation remains high.
