"Catacomb of Torment Honors Classic Horror Comic Cover"
Few comics have left a mark on pop culture quite like EC Comics' 1954 *Crime SuspenStories* #22. Even if you don’t recognize the title, chances are you’ve seen its shocking cover—a man holding his wife’s severed head while gripping an ax in the pouring rain. This single image has become one of the most recognizable and controversial visuals in comic book history. It played a pivotal role in fueling the anti-comics movement of the 1950s, eventually leading to the establishment of the Comics Code Authority and contributing to the near-collapse of EC Comics itself.
But EC is back—and better than ever. The legendary publisher has been resurrected under Oni Press, breathing new life into the classic horror anthology format that made it famous. As part of this revival, EC continues to honor its rich legacy with fresh takes on iconic imagery and storytelling styles. A standout example is artist Jay Stephens’ newly revealed cover for *Catacomb of Torment* #1, which pays direct homage to Johnny Craig’s infamous *Crime SuspenStories* #22 artwork. You can view it exclusively here:
For comparison, here's the original cover from *Crime SuspenStories* #22, also illustrated by Johnny Craig:
*Catacomb of Torment* is one of several new titles launching under EC’s “Summer of Fear” campaign. This chilling horror anthology brings together an all-star lineup of creators including John Arcudi, Marguerite Bennett, Dan McDaid, Matt Kindt, David Lapham, and Tonči Zonjić. It will be joined by other terrifying tales such as Corinna Bechko and Andrea Sorrentino’s *Blood Type*, and the sequel series *Cruel Universe 2*, featuring work by J. Holtham, Kano, Ann Nocenti, David Rubín, and Greg Smallwood.
"Our EC Comics line is not only the best-selling line of comics in Oni's nearly 30-year history, but they're also an absolute blast to produce," said Hunter Gorinson, President & Publisher of Oni Press. "After surpassing our expectations with *Epitaphs From the Abyss*, *Cruel Universe*, and *Cruel Kingdom* last year, we’re pushing ourselves even harder—aiming for bolder stories, bigger scares, and yes… more blood."
Oni Press Editor-in-Chief Sierra Hahn added, "Working on EC over the past year has been deeply inspiring for everyone involved—from our team at Oni to the incredible collaborators shaping each story. It’s a true pleasure to bring these twisted morality tales to life alongside some of the finest storytellers in the industry. This summer’s slate promises to be just as thrilling."
