"Conquer Hulao Gate in Dynasty Warriors: Origins: Strategies Revealed"
One of the most legendary and unforgettable battles in any *Dynasty Warriors* title is the Battle of Hulao Gate—and rest assured, it makes a grand appearance in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*. This mission serves as the climactic finale of Chapter 2 and poses one of the toughest challenges you’ll face early in the game. Defeating Dong Zhuo won’t be easy, but with the right strategy, you can emerge victorious.
Dynasty Warriors: Origins – Battle of Hulao Gate Guide
The Battle of Hulao Gate marks the final stage of Chapter 2. Your objective? Take down Dong Zhuo. However, reaching him will require careful planning and execution, as this mission is longer and more intense than any previous encounter.
At the start of the mission, focus on clearing out the four enemy bases located in the bottom-right quadrant of the map. As you conquer the first two, a cutscene will trigger showing mounted cavalry charging from a hill toward the battlefield. Don’t let this distract you—these enemies will naturally fall as you proceed through the bases. If you defeat their commander, Zhang Liao, you'll earn the twin pike weapon for your arsenal.
Once all bases are cleared, you can initiate an assault on the gate. This leads to a hectic confrontation with Dong Zhuo’s forces. Your primary task here is to protect Cao Cao until he activates his Grand Tactic. Once he does, many enemy defenses will collapse, allowing you to advance closer to Hulao Gate.
Lu Bu Appears
This is when the stakes rise dramatically—Dong Zhuo deploys Lu Bu to the frontline. Under no circumstances should you engage Lu Bu directly. A solo duel with him is a guaranteed defeat. Instead, avoid him entirely and focus on eliminating weaker enemy officers at the fringes of the battlefield to help maintain your morale, which drops drastically in his presence.
Eventually, Lu Bu will head toward your main base to target Yuan Shao. Resist the urge to chase him—this is a cardinal rule in *Dynasty Warriors*. Liu Bei and his forces will attempt to intercept Lu Bu, giving you a limited window to finish off Dong Zhuo. Keep in mind that once Liu Bei's forces retreat, Lu Bu will return and likely end the mission if you're not close to defeating Dong Zhuo.
Go After Dong Zhuo
With Lu Bu temporarily out of the picture, use this opportunity wisely. If you need to replenish meat buns or restore health, head back to any of your secured bases before returning to the front lines. Cao Cao will begin preparing a charge, but instead of joining him, move north and west to capture additional bases.
Once you’ve assembled three squads and fully healed, enter whichever commander circle is closest and prepare for battle. You’ll face an overwhelming force as Dong Zhuo initiates a devastating Grand Tactic involving fireballs. To stop it, destroy the two front catapults. If available, activate Musou Rage and charge through the wall of soldiers blocking access to the catapults. Clearing these enemies will allow your troops to destroy the siege weapons and halt Dong Zhuo’s attack.
Shortly after, Dong Zhuo will launch another Grand Tactic. This time, you must defeat one of his officers to break it. Ascend the stairs on the right side, only to be ambushed by Diaochan—who has now allied with Dong Zhuo. If possible, challenge her first. Though she fights aggressively with fast combos, defeating her prevents her from interfering during your officer duel.
Once the second Grand Tactic is neutralized, the path to Dong Zhuo should be clear. By now, your forces will have high morale, making short work of the remaining enemies. Lu Bu will still be occupied with Liu Bei’s army, and Dian Wei may even activate a Grand Tactic to further aid your push. While the temptation to duel Dong Zhuo might be strong, simply attack normally—he and his forces will offer minimal resistance at this point.
And there you have it: how to complete the epic Battle of Hulao Gate in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*. With smart positioning, strategic timing, and a bit of patience, you can claim victory over one of the most iconic conflicts in the Three Kingdoms saga.
*Dynasty Warriors: Origins* is now available on PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
