CEO Travis Willingham has teased that an announcement could be imminent, stating it might come "any day." This news was shared during an interview with Business Insider, where Willingham expressed enthusiasm about the project's progress, though specifics like the game's title and its connection to the Critical Role universe remain under wraps.

Willingham elaborated on the game's interactive nature, explaining, "They'll actually be getting their hand on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria." This suggests that players will have a significant role in shaping the narrative within the established Critical Role setting.

Willingham, who is not only an actor but also a star of Critical Role, co-founded the company alongside other well-known voice actors such as Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, and Matthew Mercer. From its humble beginnings, the D&D show has expanded into a vast universe, highlighted by its successful Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.

The upcoming video game will complement Critical Role's other ventures without necessarily being a direct extension of them. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham mentioned the team's "active pursuit" of developing this video game spinoff, indicating they were nearing the end of a multi-year effort. Whether the game will follow one of the group's existing campaigns or introduce an original story set in their world is still unclear.

Originally, the Critical Role team anticipated making an announcement by the end of 2024 or early 2025. Now, in early 2025, the announcement seems to be right around the corner. Willingham also spoke to Rolling Stone about the cautious approach they're taking, saying, "Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels. You know, there’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."
