The story depicts an older, powerless Matt Murdock grappling with his past, years after abandoning his superhero life. This isn't just Matt; superheroes are largely absent in this future Marvel Universe. Soule explains Matt's power loss as a consequence of his radioactive origin. The core concept explores the essence of Matt Murdock beyond his Daredevil persona.
This "aging superhero" trope, also seen in works like Old Man Logan, allows for a potent re-examination of familiar characters. Soule emphasizes the opportunity to strip away the superhero exterior, revealing the character's core while simultaneously exploring new creative avenues outside typical continuity. Cold Day in Hell creates a unique corner of the Marvel Universe with its own history and consequences, allowing for inventive storytelling.
Soule views this collaboration with McNiven as an evolution of their past work, including Death of Wolverine. The creative process was highly collaborative, described as a "jazz" approach.
The supporting cast and villains will also feature prominently, promising significant surprises. While the story is set in the future, it's designed to be accessible to new readers with basic knowledge of Daredevil's background.
Interestingly, Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+ draws inspiration from Soule's previous Daredevil comic run, including elements like Mayor Fisk and the villain Muse. Soule confirms the show incorporates thematic elements from his 2015-2018 run, and he expresses excitement about the show reaching a wider audience.
Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell #1 releases April 2, 2025.
