Destiny 2 Username Glitch: Bungie Names Mysteriously Altered
Bungie to Issue Free Name Change Tokens
Following a recent update, many Destiny 2 players discovered their Bungie Names had been inexplicably replaced with "Guardian" followed by a random number sequence. This widespread issue, initially reported around August 14th, stemmed from a bug in Bungie's name moderation system.
Bungie acknowledged the problem on Twitter (X), stating, "We're investigating a large-scale issue where our name moderation tool incorrectly changed many account names. We'll provide an update tomorrow, including details on a free name change token for all players."
Bungie's system usually flags and changes usernames violating their terms of service (offensive language, personal information, etc.). However, this incident affected numerous players with perfectly acceptable names, some of whom had used the same name since 2015.
The developers swiftly responded to player concerns with a series of tweets confirming the significant number of affected accounts. A subsequent update revealed the root cause and implemented a server-side fix to prevent further occurrences. The team tweeted, "The issue causing the mass Bungie name changes has been identified and resolved on the server-side."
They further confirmed plans to distribute free name change tokens to all players as compensation, promising further communication once details are finalized.
Bungie urges patience while they continue resolving this unexpected problem. Affected players can anticipate receiving free name change tokens and additional updates from Bungie in the coming days.
