Doom Now Playable in PDF Format: Toasters Outdated
Doom, the iconic shooter game, has been famously ported to an astonishing array of devices, from toasters to fridges, showcasing its incredible versatility. However, the frontier for truly groundbreaking platforms seems to be narrowing—until now. A high school student named ading2210 has ingeniously ported Doom into a PDF file, playable directly in your browser. Sure, this version might lack text and sound, but who needs those when you can tackle E1M1 while procrastinating on your taxes?
Inspired by the TetrisPDF project, ading2210 leveraged the Javascript capabilities within browser-based PDF readers to bring Doom to this unconventional format. Despite security restrictions limiting the full potential of PDF scripting, the student managed to use a six-color ASCII grid to render sprites and graphics, achieving a legible, if somewhat slow, 80ms per frame.
While you may not rush to replace your PS5 with this PDF version, the sheer novelty of playing Doom within a document file is remarkable. Thomas Rinsma, the creator of TetrisPDF, acknowledged ading2210's effort on Hacker News, noting that the student's version was "neater in many ways."
Although this PDF rendition of Doom may not be the ideal way to experience the game for the first time, the thrill of seeing it run on such unconventional platforms—from files to living gut bacteria—continues to captivate and entertain gamers worldwide.
