Duke Nukem Rights Acquired by DMC, Castlevania Producer

Adi Shankar, the creative force behind Netflix's acclaimed Castlevania and Devil May Cry series, has secured the screen rights to Duke Nukem from Gearbox Software. The producer revealed this career move during an Esquire interview, confirming that while Devil May Cry Season 2 remains his current priority, a new Duke Nukem adaptation is actively in development.
Major Video Game Adaptations Coming in 2025 and Beyond
The Duke Nukem franchise first emerged in 1991, but truly found its identity with 1996's revolutionary Duke Nukem 3D. Despite numerous sequels, the 2011 release of Duke Nukem Forever for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 received widespread criticism, effectively putting the franchise on ice for over a decade.
Shankar is currently brainstorming fresh approaches for Duke Nukem's return. While details remain scarce about whether this will be an animated series, live-action film, or other format, the producer has established clear creative boundaries for the project.
"This is my rebellious statement to the industry," Shankar explained regarding his vision. "Duke Nukem exploded as counterculture, then got diluted by corporate branding. True to its spirit, this can't be a corporate product - that would defeat its entire purpose. I'm maintaining complete creative control."
