Elden Ring's "Christmas Tree" Sparks Joy

Reddit user Independent-Design17 proposed an intriguing connection between Elden Ring's Erdtree and the Australian Christmas tree, Nuytsia floribunda. While a surface-level resemblance, particularly between the smaller Erdtrees in the game and Nuytsia, is apparent, fans have unearthed deeper thematic similarities.

In Elden Ring lore, the Erdtree guides the souls of the deceased, reflected by the catacombs at its base. This resonates with Aboriginal Australian culture, where Nuytsia is revered as a "spirit tree," its blossoms representing the souls of the departed, their vibrant hues mirroring the sunset, the perceived destination of spirits.

Further strengthening this comparison is Nuytsia's semi-parasitic nature; it sustains itself by drawing nutrients from surrounding vegetation. This mirrors a popular fan theory positing the Erdtree as a parasite, having usurped the life force of an ancient Great Tree (though in-game descriptions reveal this "Great Tree" is a mistranslation referring to the Erdtree's own extensive root system).

Whether FromSoftware intentionally drew inspiration from Nuytsia remains a mystery, known only to the developers themselves.
