Ex-Rockstar Dev: GTA 6 Trailers Unnecessary, Hype Peak

Jan 10,26

As fans continue to wait for updates on Grand Theft Auto 6 following the debut of its first trailer in 2023, a former Rockstar developer has suggested that releasing additional trailers before the game's official launch might not be the best approach.

When Rockstar dropped the first GTA 6 trailer in December 2023, it shattered viewership records, yet the studio has remained silent since. This prolonged period without news has fueled increasingly unusual fan theories about when the next GTA 6 trailer might arrive.

Some fans have examined the number of holes in Lucia's cell door netting, studied the bullet holes in the car from the first trailer, and even scrutinized license plates. Among the most prominent conspiracy theories is the ongoing speculation about GTA 6's moon phases, which notably accurately predicted the announcement date for the first trailer, though it has since been disproven as a clue to the second trailer's release.

This leads to the crucial question: when exactly will GTA 6's second trailer be released? Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has hinted that fans might need to wait until much closer to the game's scheduled fall 2025 release for another glimpse at what's being called the world's most anticipated video game.

Former Rockstar Games technical director Obbe Vermeij, who contributed to the series through 2008's Grand Theft Auto 4 before departing nine months after its launch, stated that if the decision were his, he would not release any further trailers for GTA 6.

"If it were my decision, I wouldn't put out any more trailers," he tweeted. "The hype surrounding VI is already immense, and preserving the element of surprise will only amplify the impact of the release event."

When a user questioned whether Rockstar might simply announce the GTA 6 release date without additional promotion, Vermeij responded: "That would be a bold strategic move."

But would Rockstar actually take such an approach? By labeling the initial preview as "GTA 6 Trailer 1," the implication is that additional numbered trailers will follow. However, plans can shift. Perhaps the studio will wait until the last possible moment, prioritizing the game's development over creating a trailer that will inevitably be analyzed in exhaustive detail.

Vermeij recalled that Rockstar postponed GTA 4 in July 2007, just three months before its originally planned October 16, 2007 release, and suggested that the decision timeline for GTA 6 will likely be similar.

"Only at that point did we realize we wouldn't meet the deadline," Vermeij explained. "I expect the final decision regarding VI will come around a comparable time. Let's keep our fingers crossed for Take-Two's earnings report in August."

In a March interview with Bloomberg, Zelnick was directly asked: why is GTA 6's release date being kept under such tight wraps?

"The level of anticipation for this title might be the highest I've ever witnessed for any entertainment property," Zelnick answered. "I've been in this industry for many years and have experience across all forms of entertainment.

"Our goal is to maintain that sense of anticipation and excitement. While some competitors outline their release schedules years in advance, we've found that it's more effective to share marketing materials closer to the actual release window. This approach builds excitement while balancing it against the risk of unmet expectations. We don't always execute it perfectly, but that's what we aim for."

Mike York, who spent six years as an animator at Rockstar New England working on Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 before leaving in 2017, observed on his YouTube channel that Rockstar seems to be leveraging these conspiracy theories, deliberately withholding information about the game and the second trailer's release to stimulate further community speculation.

"Fans are stretching their imagination, developing elaborate theories to predict when the next trailer will drop," he commented.

"Rockstar has always been exceptionally secretive about their projects, and this strategy works brilliantly because it generates mystique and encourages conversation without requiring any action from them. The longer they remain silent, the more effective it becomes, as people grow increasingly eager to discuss the game and speculate about what's coming."

York further suggested that Rockstar is likely resisting pressure from its massive fanbase to announce the second trailer's release date precisely for this strategic reason.

"They could easily announce the trailer date and say, 'Here's when it's coming,' but they intentionally avoid doing so because it's an extremely effective marketing approach. When you think about it, this strategy encourages fans to develop fascinating theories.

"This brings the community together. It's an ingenious method to keep fans discussing your game during periods when you're not releasing new content.

"All these fan theories are beneficial. They generate buzz, spark conversations, and build an aura of mystery around the games."

Zelnick's comments also imply that if a second GTA 6 trailer does exist, it likely won't be released until we're much nearer to the game's fall 2025 launch, provided there are no delays. If this holds true, it could be quite some time before we receive another official look at the game.
