FFXIV Mobile Version Listed in China's Lineup of Approved Games
Recent reports from Niko Partners, a video game market research firm, suggest a joint venture between Square Enix and Tencent to develop a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV for the Chinese market. This follows earlier, unconfirmed reports of such a project.
FFXIV Mobile Game: Mostly Speculation
Niko Partners' report lists 15 games approved by China's NPPA for release, including a mobile FFXIV title reportedly developed by Tencent. Other notable titles on the list include mobile and PC versions of Rainbow Six, and mobile games based on Marvel Snap, Marvel Rivals, and Dynasty Warriors 8.
While industry whispers suggest the FFXIV mobile game will be a standalone MMORPG distinct from the PC version, neither Square Enix nor Tencent have officially confirmed this development. Analyst Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners highlighted this lack of official confirmation on X (formerly Twitter) on August 3rd.
This potential partnership aligns with Square Enix's stated May announcement of a multi-platform strategy for its key franchises, including Final Fantasy. Given Tencent's significant presence in the mobile gaming market, this collaboration would represent a key step in Square Enix's expansion. However, until official confirmation arrives, the existence of this FFXIV mobile game remains largely unverified.
