FFXIV Mobile Version Rumors: Fact or Fiction?
There's a buzz circulating about Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV), the renowned MMORPG, potentially making its way to mobile devices. According to a gaming industry leak source, Kurakasis, Tencent Games and Square Enix are collaborating to bring the epic adventure to your smartphone.
They’ve Got History
This isn't Square Enix's first foray into mobile gaming with the Final Fantasy franchise, though past efforts have yielded mixed results. Take Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, for instance—it was decent but didn't fully satisfy many fans. Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia also closed its doors last year. Therefore, adapting a full-fledged MMORPG like FFXIV for mobile is a bold move.
It's crucial to note that this information remains unverified. Square Enix has not made any formal announcements regarding this. However, there have been hints in the past suggesting that Square Enix and Tencent might be working on something together. In 2018, the two companies discussed content collaboration, and in 2021, then-president of Square Enix, Yosuke Matsuda, mentioned ongoing discussions about various projects with Tencent. So, while this rumor isn't entirely unexpected, it's still speculative.
Kurakasis’ leak doesn’t provide a timeline, leaving us to ponder whether this project is still in its early stages or if it's even guaranteed. An official announcement could be some time away.
The big question is whether Square Enix can successfully translate FFXIV's intricate mechanics to a mobile platform without diluting the depth that fans cherish. It will be fascinating to see how they address this challenge. However, if the mobile version turns out to be a clunky or watered-down iteration of the original, fans might find themselves disappointed.
