Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary Site Hints at Switch 2 Remake Reveal
The excitement surrounding the potential remake of Final Fantasy 9 has been reignited with the launch of Square Enix's official Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary website. This Japanese-language site commemorates the game's original release date on July 7, 2000, and highlights the upcoming 25th anniversary.
The website teases fans with a promise of "various projects, including merchandise and collaborations" to celebrate the milestone, fueling speculation about a possible announcement of the long-awaited Final Fantasy 9 remake. The timing of the website's launch aligns closely with Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2-focused Direct on April 2, leading some to speculate that Square Enix might unveil the remake for the new console at the event.
While the website's mention of merchandise and collaborations might seem routine, the phrase "various projects" has sparked significant buzz among the fanbase. Last year, Final Fantasy 14 producer Naoki 'Yoshi-P' Yoshida discussed the challenges of remaking Final Fantasy 9, noting its substantial content might necessitate a multi-game approach similar to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy.
In early 2024, Yoshi-P further stoked the flames of speculation by announcing Final Fantasy 9-themed bonuses for the Collector's Edition and Digital Collector's Edition of the Final Fantasy 14 expansion, Dawntrail. These include the Ark summon as a mount and a wind-up Princess Garnet minion. Pre-orders of Dawntrail also come with a wind-up Zidane minion. During PAX East, Yoshi-P hinted at the significance of these Final Fantasy 9 references but kept the reason a "secret."
Rumors of a Final Fantasy 9 remake have persisted since a 2021 Nvidia leak, which listed several unannounced Square Enix titles, including the remake. Although the leak has proven accurate for other titles like the Chrono Cross remaster and Kingdom Hearts 4, Final Fantasy 9 and Final Fantasy Tactics remain unconfirmed. Additionally, a Final Fantasy 9 animated series was reported to be in development around the same time, though no further updates have surfaced since.
