Final Fantasy Originator's Enduring Quest for FF6 Successor
Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, is back in the game development arena, despite previous retirement plans. His next project aims to be a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy VI.
A New Chapter After Fantasian
Initially intending Fantasian to be his final project, Sakaguchi's positive experience collaborating with his team on Fantasian Neo Dimension spurred him to create another game. He envisions this new title as a follow-up to Final Fantasy VI, aiming for a blend of classic and innovative elements. He describes this upcoming game as "part two of my farewell note."
Development Update and Speculation
In a 2024 interview with Famitsu, Sakaguchi confirmed the project's existence, estimating approximately two more years until completion. A Mistwalker trademark filing for "FANTASIAN DARK AGE" fueled fan speculation about a possible sequel, although this remains unconfirmed. The new game will reportedly maintain the fantasy RPG style of his previous works. No official title or details have been released.
Reunion with Square Enix
The recent collaboration with Square Enix to port FANTASIAN Neo Dimension to multiple platforms (PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch) in December 2024 marked a significant event. Sakaguchi reflected on this partnership, highlighting the full-circle experience of returning to his roots. Despite this collaboration, he maintains his focus on new creations rather than revisiting past Final Fantasy titles.
Sakaguchi's illustrious career, spanning from his early days at Square (now Square Enix) to founding Mistwalker, continues to captivate fans worldwide. His upcoming project promises a new chapter in his legacy, building upon his rich history while forging a new path.
