Fortnite Updates Master Chief Skin with Major Changes
In a recent turn of events, *Fortnite* has reinstated the unlockable Matte Black style for The Master Chief skin following significant community backlash. This reversal by Epic Games comes as a relief to many fans who were eagerly anticipating the return of this iconic skin.
December is a bustling month for *Fortnite* enthusiasts, with the Winterfest event bringing a plethora of new NPCs, quests, and items to the game. Despite the overall positive reception to this year's event, the reintroduction of certain skins has stirred controversy. Amidst this, Epic Games has provided an update regarding The Master Chief skin.
Through a recent tweet, *Fortnite* shared exciting news for players interested in The Master Chief skin. Originally introduced in 2020, this skin quickly became a fan favorite. While it was last seen in the Item Shop in 2022, the community was thrilled to see it make a comeback in 2024. However, on December 23, Epic Games announced that the Matte Black style would no longer be available, reversing an earlier promise from 2020 that allowed players to unlock this style at any time after purchasing the skin and playing on Xbox Series X/S. In response to widespread criticism, Epic Games has now reverted its decision, confirming that players can still unlock the Matte Black style as initially promised.
The Master Chief Skin Had a Controversial Return to Fortnite
The initial announcement to remove the Matte Black style sparked discontent among fans, some of whom speculated that this move could attract scrutiny from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). This concern is timely, as the FTC recently issued $72 million in refunds to *Fortnite* players affected by Epic Games' use of "dark patterns." The decision to alter the availability of the Matte Black style impacted not only new buyers but also those who had purchased the skin back in 2020, preventing them from unlocking the style.
The Master Chief skin isn't the only one to stir controversy lately. The return of the Renegade Raider skin also caused a stir, with some veteran *Fortnite* players threatening to quit the game. Currently, some fans are calling for an original (OG) style for those who bought The Master Chief skin at its launch. While Epic Games has resolved the issue with the Matte Black style, the addition of an OG style appears unlikely at this time.
