George R.R. Martin Producing New Hercules Film, Winds of Winter Delayed?

Acclaimed Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin has signed on as producer for an upcoming animated Hercules film, marking another creative endeavor outside his unfinished book series. This news comes as fans continue waiting for The Winds of Winter, the next installment in his A Song of Ice and Fire saga.
A Mythological Reimagining
The Hollywood Reporter reveals Martin will produce this fresh adaptation of Hercules' legendary Twelve Labors. Titled A Dozen Tough Jobs, the animated feature will retell the Greek myth through the eyes of a 1920s Mississippi farmer - blending ancient heroism with American Depression-era struggles.
Interestingly, while Martin oversees production, the screenplay falls to Joe R. Lansdale, the cult author behind bizarre tales like Bubba Ho-Tep (which pitted Elvis against an Egyptian mummy).
"George R.R. Martin understands epic storytelling better than anyone," said David Steward II of Lion Forge Entertainment. "This isn't just another mythology reboot - we're delivering an unprecedented interpretation that grounds these myths in historical reality while expanding their narrative possibilities."
The Long Wait Continues
Meanwhile, the fantasy author's devoted readers remain in limbo regarding his literary masterpiece. It's been nearly 14 years since the last A Song of Ice and Fire novel, A Dance with Dragons (2011), with no confirmed release date for The Winds of Winter.
Though Martin maintains plans to conclude the series with A Dream of Spring, his recent blog update offered little hope for impatient fans: "Television commitments consumed most of 2024," he wrote, adding that false rumors about imminent releases frustrate him.
Martin continues expanding his creative portfolio through HBO's Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, Westeros-inspired historical fiction, and even video game collaborations like his worldbuilding contributions to Elden Ring.
