Global Reaction to Nintendo Switch 2's High Price and Features

Aug 08,25

The launch year for Nintendo's Switch 2 is here, delivering a more powerful iteration of the beloved console. Yet, global economic challenges have cast a shadow over its arrival, complicating its appeal for many fans.

The ongoing U.S.-China trade tensions add further complexity. With a $450 USD price tag for the console and an $80 USD cost for Mario Kart World, the Switch 2 has sparked debate amid rising game and hardware prices, both in the U.S. and globally.

To gauge international sentiment, I consulted editors from IGN’s global network for insights into the Switch 2’s anticipated release.

Global Perspectives on the Nintendo Switch 2

Feedback from IGN editors in Europe, South America, and Asia reveals a varied response. The console’s upgrades, such as a 120hz refresh rate, HDR, and 4K output, have been well-received, but the absence of an OLED screen has drawn criticism.

“IGN Italia’s audience is largely unhappy with the Nintendo Switch 2,” says Alessandro Digioia, editor-in-chief at IGN Italy. “Comments across articles and social media highlight concerns over the price, lack of an OLED display, no trophy system, and a modest launch lineup. While some third-party titles were exciting, many expected stronger first-party games from Nintendo.”

IGN Portugal’s Pedro Pestana echoed similar views: “I’m not overly impressed with the Switch 2. It’s an enhanced version of the original—better in every way, but lacking the original’s novelty. Still, Mario Kart World looks impressive, and the games will likely make or break it.”

In contrast, some regions are more enthusiastic. IGN Benelux’s Nick Nijiland notes positive feedback despite the price. “Our audience has embraced the console, even with complaints about cost. Pre-orders sold out in hours, and our Discord surged with new members when we announced pre-order updates.”

IGN Turkey’s Ersin Kilic reports favorable reactions: “Readers appreciate Nintendo addressing issues from the original Switch. The improved LCD screen has been a highlight, though many criticized the lack of Hall Effect technology in the Joy-Con 2, which could have reduced drift issues.”

IGN China’s Kamui Ye shared mixed sentiments: “The reveal disappointed many due to a weak launch lineup and inconsistent regional pricing.” However, Ye notes that loyal fans remain hopeful, valuing backward compatibility, magnetic Joy-Cons, and Nintendo’s track record of long-term software support.

“Nintendo’s dedicated fanbase seems willing to overlook initial shortcomings, trusting the company’s history of delivering strong games over time,” Ye adds.

Concerns Over Hardware Costs and Trade Policies

The Switch 2 is set to launch at $450 USD in the U.S., with pre-orders delayed due to ongoing tariff disputes under President Trump. This has paused U.S. and Canadian pre-orders, while other regions move forward, aiming for a June 5 release.

IGN Germany’s Antonia Dressler notes that European markets are largely unaffected by U.S. tariffs. However, pricing remains a concern: “Readers compare the Switch 2’s cost to the PS5, which many see as a better value, yet pre-orders are still strong.”

In Africa, IGN’s Zaid Kriel observes, “At R12,499, the Switch 2’s price now rivals the PS5 and Xbox Series X, eliminating its edge as a budget-friendly option, especially with rising game prices.”

Purchasing the Nintendo Switch 2 with accessories will come at a steep cost.

“Pricing dominated discussions around the Switch 2 reveal,” says IGN France’s Erwan Lafleuriel. “The lack of surprises, due to prior leaks, and no standout game announcements left the reveal feeling underwhelming.”

In Brazil, IGN’s Matheus de Lucca highlights tariff-related challenges: “The U.S. trade war exacerbates issues for Brazil, where the weak Real could make the Switch 2 unaffordable for many, limiting its reach in Latin America.”

In Japan, Nintendo’s region-locked, lower-priced Switch 2 aims to protect the domestic market. “At under 50,000 yen, it’s competitively priced compared to the 77,000 yen PS5,” says IGN Japan’s Daniel Robson. “The region lock prevents imports, but the price remains a stretch for many families here.”

Software Costs Spark Widespread Debate

The steep cost of Switch 2 games, particularly Mario Kart World at $80 USD, has fueled significant backlash. While some launch titles are priced at $70 USD or as low as $10 USD, the high-end pricing has raised fears of a new standard for Nintendo games.

“Game pricing is the top concern for our readers and Italy’s gaming community,” says IGN Italy’s Digioia. “The jump to €90 for some first-party titles, combined with Nintendo’s reluctance to offer discounts, feels excessive. The €9.99 Switch 2 Welcome Tour and paid upgrades for existing games have also drawn criticism.”

“Fans are frustrated,” says IGN Germany’s Dressler. “At 90 Euros, Mario Kart World sets a record for game pricing in Germany. Charging for the tutorial game feels like pure greed.”

Mario Kart World’s $80 price tag is a major point of contention, alongside the $10 fee for Switch 2 Welcome Tour.

In China, where the Switch 2 lacks an official release, IGN China’s Ye notes a different perspective: “Gray market imports from Japan and Hong Kong offer lower game prices, making the console’s cost seem reasonable compared to alternatives like the Steam Deck.”

The Switch 2 is poised for success as a familiar upgrade to a wildly popular console, but its high costs and tariff-related uncertainties have tempered enthusiasm. Global excitement remains, but with more reservations than expected for a Nintendo launch.
