Hollow Knight: Silksong Playable at Australian Museum in September 2025

May 18,25

IGN has exciting news for fans of Hollow Knight: Silksong: the eagerly awaited game will be playable at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) in Melbourne starting September 18, 2025. Developed by Team Cherry, a studio based in Adelaide, South Australia, Silksong has been one of the most anticipated indie games globally, consistently topping the Steam wishlist chart. While the studio has only confirmed a vague 2025 release window, this announcement at least provides a concrete date for when the game will be available for play in a public setting.

As part of the Game Worlds exhibition at ACMI, Silksong will not only be playable but will also feature displays that explore the game's intricate design and artistic direction. This exhibition promises to give visitors an in-depth look at elements such as the hundreds of sprites that animate Hornet’s movements and attacks, and the logic behind the game's challenging boss fights.

ACMI co-curators Bethan Johnson and Jini Maxwell expressed their excitement about showcasing Silksong: "Since Hollow Knight: Silksong's initial announcement in 2019, it has been one of the most anticipated indie games on the planet – and we are thrilled to celebrate the design of this South Australian-made game as a centrepiece of Game Worlds in September. From the hundreds of sprites that animate Hornet’s different movements and attacks, to the logic behind the game’s most challenging boss fights – and of course, having the game playable in-gallery – our Silksong displays delve deeply into the details of the game's artistic direction and design. We’re so grateful to Team Cherry for trusting us with their work, and so excited to share that work with you!"

To complement the announcement, ACMI shared a sprite sheet from Silksong, one of several design elements that will be showcased in the Game Worlds exhibition. This image was provided to IGN with permission.

While the playable date at ACMI suggests that Silksong might be released before September 18, perhaps as early as August, the exact release date remains uncertain. However, recent developments indicate that things are moving forward. Silksong made a brief appearance at Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct last month, confirming Team Cherry’s updated 2025 release window. This was the most significant update on Silksong in years, featuring new gameplay footage.

Originally announced for Nintendo Switch and PC, with plans to later release on Xbox (including Game Pass), PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, Silksong has been the subject of numerous intriguing teases over the years. Team Cherry started 2025 with a mysterious tease involving a chocolate cake recipe, sparking speculation among fans about a possible re-reveal in April. As anticipation continues to build, Hollow Knight: Silksong remains one of the most eagerly awaited games in the indie gaming community.
