James Gunn Confirms 'Absolutely Zero CG' in Superman’s Flying Face After TV Spot Raises Eyebrows

Feb 26,25

DC Studios co-chief James Gunn addresses online criticism regarding Superman's facial expression during a flight sequence in a recently released TV spot.

A new 30-second promotional video showcased previously unseen footage, including Lex Luthor near the Fortress of Solitude and Superman performing a barrel roll during high-speed flight. This latter shot sparked debate, with some viewers commenting on Superman's seemingly unnatural facial stillness contrasted with the movement of his hair and cape. Speculation ranged from technical issues to "wonky CGI."

However, Gunn clarified on Threads that the shot employed no CGI on Superman's face. He attributed the perceived anomaly to the use of a wide-angle lens at close range, emphasizing that both the Svalbard, Norway, location and David Corenswet's performance were entirely real. The implication is that Corenswet's expression, described as a knowing smirk, is a genuine reaction, possibly influenced by wind or other on-set factors.

Despite Gunn's explanation, the debate persists, with comparisons drawn to the flying Adam Warlock scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, also directed by Gunn. Nevertheless, excitement for the Superman film remains high. The film, opening July 11, 2025, is the inaugural entry in the DCU's "Chapter One: Gods and Monsters." Further information is available on various DC heroes and villains featured in the trailer, James Gunn's comments on Krypto's on-screen portrayal, and the film's thematic focus on hope.
