James Gunn, John Cena Surprised by HBO Max Rebrand
In a surprising twist, DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn and other members of the Peacemaker crew were caught off guard by Warner Bros. Discovery's decision to revert its streaming service back to the HBO Max name. The revelation came to light while filming promotional content for Peacemaker Season 2, and their reactions have been nothing short of priceless.
The news broke today that HBO's parent company would be undoing its previous rebrand, moving away from the "Max" name to the more familiar HBO Max moniker this summer. This decision has left not just fans but also key figures at DC Studios puzzled and amused.
The official X account for the soon-to-be-renamed Max shared videos capturing the genuine reactions of Gunn and Peacemaker star John Cena. In one clip, Gunn is seen reading from a teleprompter, promoting Peacemaker Season 2, set to debut on August 21. Mid-sentence, Gunn is visibly surprised when the script refers to HBO Max instead of Max, learning on the spot that the name change is official and will be announced at the Upfront.

"God, we’re calling it HBO Max – what?" Gunn quips. "We’re calling it HBO Max again?" The confusion spreads as other crew members, including DC Studios Co-CEO Peter Safran, chime in, creating a hilarious moment caught on camera. Gunn, however, expresses his approval: "That’s good, actually, but I didn’t know that was happening."
Meanwhile, John Cena seems to be in the know and is seen breaking the news to the crew in his video, adding to the light-hearted chaos.

While this could be an elaborate publicity stunt by the HBO Max team, the genuine reactions from the DC Studios crew provide a humorous glimpse into their world. HBO Max, which originally launched in 2020, became a go-to streaming platform until 2023 when Warner Bros. Discovery decided to simplify it to Max. Now, after two years, the company has decided that HBO Max is indeed a great name.
As of now, no specific release date for the rebrand has been set. While we anticipate updates on both the HBO Max rebrand and Peacemaker Season 2, fans can explore the most anticipated DC projects slated for 2025 and delve into the key highlights from the latest Peacemaker Season 2 trailer.
