Kathleen Kennedy to Retire from Lucasfilm in 2025

May 03,25

Recent reports suggest that Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy may be considering stepping down by the end of 2025. According to Puck News, the veteran film producer, who has been at the helm of Lucasfilm since 2012, is looking to retire once her contract concludes this year. It's worth noting that Kennedy had previously contemplated retiring in 2024 but chose to delay her decision. While a source close to Kennedy told Variety that Puck's story was "pure speculation," The Hollywood Reporter corroborated the news from Puck.

Kennedy joined Lucasfilm as a co-chair handpicked by George Lucas himself. After Lucas stepped away, she ascended to the role of president, steering the Star Wars franchise ever since. Her leadership has seen the launch of the sequel trilogy, encompassing Star Wars Episodes 7-9, and the advent of Star Wars' streaming era, which includes acclaimed series like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Andor, Ahsoka, Skeleton Key, and more. While films such as "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" have been massive successes, others, like "Solo: A Star Wars Story," have stirred controversy and faced financial losses at the box office.

Should Kennedy's departure materialize, it could cast uncertainty over numerous announced and rumored projects. These include new films from directors James Mangold, Taika Waititi, and Donald Glover, as well as an untitled movie featuring Rey, which has been slow to come to fruition. Upcoming Star Wars projects on the slate include "The Mandalorian & Grogu" and a new trilogy spearheaded by Simon Kinberg.

Before her tenure at Lucasfilm, Kennedy co-founded Amblin Entertainment alongside Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall. Her illustrious career includes producing iconic films such as E.T., Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, and other 90s classics, earning her eight Academy Award nominations for Best Picture.
