Killzone Composer Wonders if People Have Moved on From the Series: 'I Get the Sense That People Want Something a Bit More Casual, a Bit More Quick'
The beloved Sony franchise, Killzone, has been on hiatus for quite some time, leaving fans longing for its return. In a recent interview with VideoGamer for the PlayStation: The Concert Tour, Killzone's composer Joris de Man added his voice to the growing chorus of those hoping to see the series revived.
De Man acknowledged the existence of fan petitions and shared his personal hope for the franchise's return, while also recognizing the complexities involved. "I know that there have been petitions for it," he stated. "I think it's [tricky] because, I can't speak for Guerrilla or anything... I don't know if it will ever happen. I hope it will because I think it is quite an iconic franchise, but I also think it kind of has to take into account kind of the sensitivities and the shift in, I guess, what people want because it is quite bleak in some ways."
Discussing potential formats for Killzone's return, de Man suggested that a remastered collection might be more successful than launching a brand new entry. "I think [a] remastered one would be successful, I don't know if a new game would be as much," he noted. He further speculated that the gaming audience's preferences might have shifted toward more casual and quicker-paced games, contrasting with Killzone's slower, weightier gameplay style. The series, particularly Killzone 2, was known for its deliberate pacing and darker, gritty atmosphere, which was sometimes criticized for its perceived input lag on the PlayStation 3.
Despite these considerations, the desire for Killzone's revival persists among its dedicated fanbase. It's been over a decade since the release of Killzone Shadow Fall, and while Guerrilla Games appears to have shifted its focus to the Horizon series, as mentioned in a Washington Post interview, the idea of bringing back Killzone—or another of Sony's PlayStation shooter franchises—remains alluring to many.
As fans continue to hold out hope, they can take comfort knowing that Joris de Man stands with them, advocating for the return of this iconic series. Whether Sony will heed these calls remains to be seen, but the passion for Killzone's potential comeback is palpable among its supporters.
