Mahershala Ali's Blade Movie Project Appears to Be Dead

The much-anticipated Blade movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe appears to have reached a dead end, leaving fans disheartened. The film, which promised to bring Mahershala Ali into the fold as the iconic Daywalker, has encountered numerous obstacles over the years, and now it seems the project has stalled indefinitely.

Rapper and artist Flying Lotus recently shared on X (formerly known as Twitter) that he was set to compose the music for Blade before the project fell through. "I guess we are so far from it even being a possibility now but. Yeah I was signed on to write music for the new BLADE movie before it fell thru," he stated. He expressed doubt about the film's revival but noted it would have been an exciting opportunity.

Adding to the disappointment, costume designer Ruth E. Carter revealed on The John Campea Show that she was lined up to design costumes for Blade, which was intended to be set in the 1920s. This setting would have provided a unique backdrop for the film's design elements, enhancing its appeal.

Actor Delroy Lindo, who was also attached to star in the film alongside Ali, discussed the project's collapse in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. He expressed enthusiasm about the inclusive approach Marvel initially took with him and the creative team. "And then, for whatever reason, it just went off the rails," he lamented.

Blade was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, with a planned release this November if everything had gone according to plan. The film has seen several directors come and go, including Yann Demange and Bassam Tariq, but none have managed to steer the project to completion.

Despite being removed from Marvel’s release schedule in October 2024, the film has not been given a new release date. However, MCU boss Kevin Feige remains optimistic about the project. In a November 2024 interview with Omelete, he affirmed, "We are committed to Blade. We love the character, we love Mahershala's take on him. And rest assured: whenever we change direction with a project, or are still figuring out how it fits into our schedule, we let the audience know. You're all up to date on what's happening. But I can tell you that the character will indeed make it to the MCU."
