"Mario Kart 9 Character Redesign Inspired by Super Mario Bros. Movie"

Nintendo has finally unveiled the much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, and alongside it, the exciting Mario Kart 9. However, fans have quickly noticed that one character in particular has undergone a significant redesign, seemingly drawing inspiration from The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The trailer showcased over a dozen characters, and while most appeared as fans would expect, Donkey Kong stood out with a noticeably different look. Historically, Donkey Kong's design has remained consistent across various games, including Mario Kart 8, Mario Tennis, and Donkey Kong Country Returns. Yet, the wildly successful The Super Mario Bros. Movie introduced a fresh take on the character, which Nintendo now appears to be integrating into its new games.

Only a brief glimpse of Mario Kart 9 was shared, with Donkey Kong appearing in just a few scenes, and not particularly clearly at that. As such, a detailed side-by-side comparison will have to wait. Nonetheless, the new design is already visibly distinct.

Fans can expect a more in-depth look at the game in April during the Nintendo Switch 2 Nintendo Direct. The console reveal trailer provided just a few hints about the Nintendo Switch 2, focusing primarily on its appearance. It confirmed that the hardware is mostly backwards compatible, the Joy-Cons feature a mysterious new button, and a theory about using the controller as a mouse appears to be accurate.

Although the Nintendo Switch 2 was revealed with a 2025 release window, it likely won't hit the market until June at the earliest. This is due to numerous hands-on events planned worldwide, with registration for these events opening soon.
