Mario Kart World's Free Roam: An Open World Adventure with Friends
During today's Mario Kart World Direct, we were treated to an in-depth look at the game's exciting new Free Roam mode, revealing its multiplayer capabilities and the myriad of activities available as you explore the expansive world of Mario Kart.
While we had the chance to go hands-on with Mario Kart World last week, it wasn't until today that we truly understood the scope and fun of Free Roam mode. This innovative feature sets Mario Kart World apart by allowing players to freely navigate its vast, Forza Horizon-inspired world map. Unlike previous Mario Kart titles, where races were confined to specific tracks, Mario Kart World integrates these tracks into a seamless open world, enabling players to drive from one track to another and explore the areas in between during certain game modes. In Free Roam mode, when you're not speeding around the racetracks, you embark on a delightful adventure. The world is dotted with hidden collectibles such as coins and ? panels, although the exact benefits of collecting these items remain a mystery for now. You'll also encounter P-Switches, which trigger mini-challenges like collecting blue coins, adding an extra layer of engagement to your exploration.
Free Roam mode isn't just about solo adventures; it's also a social experience. You can invite friends to join you, driving around together, snapping photos of your racers in different poses and angles using the Photo Mode, tackling challenges, or simply enjoying each other's company. The mode supports up to four players in split-screen mode on a single system, and up to eight players via local wireless play, with two players per system.
Today's Mario Kart World Direct also showcased a variety of other exciting features, including new characters, courses, and additional game modes. You can find a comprehensive roundup of all the announcements right here.
